What do this week's new releases have to offer?

Charlotte Hatherley - Alexander

Ash, Bat For Lashes, Nick Frost, Simon Pegg. Those are the main notable points about Charlotte Hatherley out of the way, but while she may always be a poor woman's PJ Harvey this track from her fourth album has got more stones than most male equivalents.

Tinchy Stryder - You're Not Alone

The Tesco-value Akon West....how I loathe Tinchy Stryder. I loathe this song. I loathe the song this is based on. I loathe its video: wardrobe by Camden market, jewellery by Claire's Accessories, cars by Addison Lee. There isn't a single redeeming factor about this song...seriously, I've re-typed this closing line in an effort to find some good in it. Nothing.

The XX – Islands

Now this is more like it. I'm at the stage where I need to be thinking about albums of the year, and it doesn't go much further than The XX. Islands is probably their quinessential track -sparse, yet intimate and dense but still layered with character. I could sit and listen to this song all day. In fact I sort of already do, and wish I could keep doing so.

Kano - Rock N Roller

Wiley has a lot to answer for. When he started handing out Rolexs all of a sudden, every rapper in the UK started spitting over some generic Baleric-ness, and while this isn't as bad as Tinchy Stryder, it's not much better. I'm sorry but when someone says something as shit as "My credit don't crunch / I'm still rock'n'roll" - Christ on a bike, cycling home. I'd rather listen to a shotgun. Or swallow one.

Armand Van Helden & A-Trak presents Duck Sauce – aNYway

While this track remains faithful to the 1970s disco/Studio 69 vibe, there isn't a great deal of innovation - is it a deliberately kitsch throwback record? Or have Van Helden and A-Trak just lost all enthusiasm? Or have they simply stumbled upon a Jackson 5 B-side? On another point, in the video, the Duke Dickson character is probably the most poorly cast character I've ever seen. Shocking. Check it out below.
