Fashion: The Original Shoe Boot

This week Whisper Mag asks if Victorian boots can make it in the noughties' style stakes

The phrase 'beyond retro' is no more applicable then when talking about Victorian boots. We're not just going back decades for this style steal, we're doing a Dr Who-esque step back in time to a whole other century (cue 'let's do the time warp' music). But is this time travelling worth it?

Well yes, of course! Victorian boots are a step beyond brogues, are prettier than workman style boots and are a cut above your average shoe boot. They are either lace ups or buttons and vary between ankle or calf length. These Victorian boots from Barratts for £60, left, are a perfect example. They are just above the ankle, have lovely brogue detailing, a good heel size and are nicely fitted.

TopShop offers a much more low key look with its take on Victorian boots, priced £65. This Bronx pair, £69.99 from Schuh, is also keeping it casual and would look great with a check print dress.

If you fancy an alternative to laces and can afford to splash out, look no further than the NW3 range from Hobbs. A bit on the pricey side at £189 but there's no denying they are, quite simply, beautiful boots.

Some high street stores have taken this fashion relic and given it a modern twist like the stud detail on this pair from ASOS for £60 and the straps and buckles given to these grey boots by Office. Both would look great with a pair of denim shorts and tights or tube skirt.

We have to give Office full marks for the name of this pair of Victorian boots: 'Annie get your gun' priced £55 (reduced from £85) would be spot on if you fancied a shot of whiskey at your local saloon whilst sitting on a piano singing some country songs. Yeehah! Alternatively they would also be suitable for a day shopping or a walk in the park, whatever you fancy really.

Victorian boots dos and don'ts:

Do – get the fit right.  Boots need to be snug around the ankle.  If you have sparrow legs that make this difficult wear thick socks underneath with the top of the sock showing above the boot.

Do – mix with other trends.  You'll get a fashion full house if you team Victorian boots with a pair of jeggings, 80s jumper and regal scarf.

Don't – get carried away. with the Victorian look and go the whole hog with a bustle, corset, petticoat and full skirt.  It may keep you warm in these chilly winter days but it'll take you ages to go the loo!
