Cheryl's set for the top spot, but who are her contenders?

Cheryl Cole - Fight For This Love

The reason I stay in most Saturday nights releases her debut single, and well let's face it, it'll be well on its way to number one by the time you read this. Musically, I don't think it stands up to much of Girls Aloud's material; if it were by American Idol's Paula Abdul Fight For This Love wouldn't bother the Top 20. I have to say though the more I listen to it the more I like the lyrics, - shame they're most likely about her rubbish husband. Check out the video below.

Miike Snow – Black & Blue

Miike Snow were Band Of The Week a while back, and this is single number 3 from their debut album. While this may not have the same quality of Animal, it's an interesting mesh between organic piano stabs and then some hyperactive electro beats, making it quite tolerable. However I've grown weary of people with superfluous letters in their name, and so Michael Snow loses 2 cool points.

Alphabeat - The Spell

Someone on Twitter (I'll spare his shame), described this as his current fav, and I really really struggle to see any quality or merit in it. It's Club Tropicana with out the cocktails, like a shit Debbie Gibson crossed with Bros. They single should come free with an issue of old kids' magazine Look In. In addition, the 79p you use to download this track would match the budget on the video.

Slayer – Hate Worldwide

"I stab you right between the eyes." What an intro, but aside from that, break this down to its bare bones and you're left with the same core ingredients that I associate with every metal track I've ever heard. Admittedly that's not a great deal, and whatever songs I would come across would clearly have to go mainstream (well c'mon you're not reading Metal Hammer), but anyway, I'm sure this is fine, as it has all the things you associate with a metal song: shredding, screaming, pounding. Plus it comes in under 3 minutes, Cheryl Cole fans.

Go-Katz – It's Not Fair

When you think about it, this cover version isn't as outlandish as you might think. In fact it's a bit like Lily Allen found this original and then just tarted it up a bit, kinda like what Britney did to Louis Armstrong's Oops I Did It Again. Actually I will not rest until this collaboration gets full recognition - get Howard Raucos and Lily Allen in a studio, get some choirs in, we'll make a mint for Kids In Africa, or some other worthy cause.
