Fashion: Pegged Trousers

Can we really look good in carrot shaped pants...?
Quite simply, yes. Pegged trousers, tapered in at the bottom and loose fitting at the top are definitely from the Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman era of fashion. (Not so much the PVC thigh high boots - more the outfits she wears to swan around a super penthouse looking lovely.)
But in times of financial crisis (where we have to at least try to wear all of the things we've bought lately) we can't just rely on them being a good buy because of the association with a classic film. They have to have some redeeming features of their own. And when it comes to pegged trousers I have found them.
Pegged trousers have been skirting around the fashion circles for the past 18 months; cropping up in high street and high end collections and have been worn by celebrities including Mischa Barton. But they have yet to become a must have item.
But that's no reason to not grab yourself a pair for this season.
Pegged trousers are a brilliant look for the office, as well as a night out. They create an alternative image and can be really flattering, providing you buy a pair that fits you well: too baggy and you'll look like you're sporting some incontinence pants; too tight and you legs will look like carrots wrapped in cling film. Yes, that all sounds scary, but it is quite easy to pull this look off and, as always, the high street is at hand to help you along the way.
Your ideal pegged trouser will... rest nicely on the hips and have some room in the bum (but not too much) and fall nicely without clinging to your thighs on the way down. They are perfect for girls with boyish figures as they create nice curves. To get extra curves opt for a high waisted fit, like this pair from ASOS for £35 (pictured above left).
If you have a bigger bum and a bit of a tum, pegged trousers can work for you too. This pleated pair from River Island for £24.99 would help to disguise your 'bits to grip.'
Trousers with a pleat down the front make your legs look longer so for the little ones amongst us Warehouse has these lovely black front pleat pegged pants for £40.
Sport some peg leg glamour with these shell coloured trousers; £32 from Topshop. They'd look fab with a sequinned t-shirt like this one from Miss Selfridge for £45.
If the only trousers you wear are jeans, there are pegged pairs too, like these from ASOS for £32 (pictured right). These are possibly the hardest to get away with wearing, but there is nothing better than a clothing challenge to get your creative juices flowing!
Now, after that trip through the land of pegged pants... there's no reason for your legs to go pegless.
