The fattest new cuts out for your greedy music appetite this week!

Speech Debelle - Spinnin'

The first single since her Mercury Music Prize win, Spinnin' has a lot to prove. Speech Debelle's style of honest lyrics and full-band production at points touches on something special, but it can also unfortunately touch on something a little cliched. Poppy with almost Lily Alle-esque strings and piano, Spinnin' also has a very recession friendly chorus. Occasionally this track works but you can't hide from the fact that it is very much Hip-Hop Light.

Hockey - Song Away

Seen a bus stop recently? Chances are there's a Hockey poster on it. Obviously one of those bands with a load of cash behind them and not a lot of ideas. With awful Springsteen-inspired vocals, weak indie guitars and - surprise surprise - a cheap drum machine supplying the beats, Song Away is a conglomeration of a load of things that are supposed to be cool, resulting in something that is definitely not.

The Dodos - Fables

Whisper Mag faves (see the album review here) hit us with a brand new single. The Dodos can be dark and distorted with a huge amount of energy, but they can also have great hooks and a great pop sensibility. Fables showcases their more delicate side perfectly. More on the folk side than the rock and roll, the song is wonderfully crafted with great little hooks and some nice touches of glockenspiel.

Fuck Buttons – Surf Solar

Everyone in the leftfield from bloggers to festival organisers have been all over Fuck Buttons for a while. Whilst their live shows are full of energy and show an impressive use of various keyboards, drum machines and microphones, they've had difficulty translating it to a listen-able record. Surf Solar is more of the same. Edited down from 10 minutes, it may be more radio friendly but you're left wondering what happens next.

Skunk Anansie - Because Of You

One of the warmer welcomed comebacks, after Skin's more poppy solo career and the other guys putting their hands to various projects, the question is, are they going to go the way everyone else has and go a bit soft? Not by the looks of things! Skunk Anansie's classic, big, head-noddingly rocking and dark riffs matched by some of the most impressively epic vocals in the business are all there. Nothing new here but you can't doubt their ability to rock.
