Will this punk pop outfit impress us?

This may be a debut album, but Lovvers have been creating a buzz since they released their seven-track EP last year. Between then and now, they have been puting the work in by rocking legendary venue The Smell in LA, playing with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and appearing at shows at SXSW - oh and making this album.

If you missed their first release, let us give you an idea of what you can expect. Lovvers ('it's two "V"s because it looks good' - apparently) like to mix old with new, so raw punk with modern melodies and analogue recording using new instruments in the studio. It seems like a very cool mixture but with the potential to be pretty pretentious; however 'new-meets-old' works well for them and to be honest the result is pretty interesting.

In their own words they believe they have made “an unconventional weird pop record". Although it isn't all that bizarre, what is strange is how low the vocals are - on first listen it seems like a production error. In actual fact that is exactly how they want it to sound, they want to be low budget even if they do have the equipment to make a polished record, but that would go against the dirty punk sound they are aiming for.

I Want To (Go) is the opening track, and understandably so as it stood out to me. I would like to go into detail about the lyrics, but erm, I have no idea what half of them where. That statement makes me feel like I have turned into a version of your mum watching Top Of The Pops, but it is entirely true.

Moving on, the title track OCD Go Go Girls (for some reason there is one less 'Go' in the single title...) is pretty catchy and fun, I can imagine it is a crowd pleaser at the many gigs Lovvers have played over the past three years.

Overall OCD Go Go Go Girls is nowhere near as fiery as Lovvers would like it to be, but it gets close. This is either a good start to their pop punk career or their best effort that will come of nothing. Personally I would like to hear more and if you are based near Leeds, Glasgow or Edinburgh then you can check them out in the flesh. For dates take a peek at their MySpace page.

Download Lovvers' OCD Go Go Go Girls from iTunes for £7.99 or buy your copy from Amazon for around £8.
