Violet turns 25 - and wonders if she will ever break her addiction to bad men
As I hurtle once again into an ill fated on/off fling with Mr DJ (I must be the poster girl for ‘repeating the same action and expecting different results insanity syndrome’), I wondered on turning 25 last week if I should adopt a more grown up attitude to my love life. I asked my friend in a balanced relationship for advice on the matter.
‘Well Vi, you pretty much want the impossible, and I guess you have more chance of getting it by sticking in these stupid flings than you do sensibly turning down every bad situation.’
‘How much chance?’
‘How much chance is there of you ever considering red high heels unsuitable for any occasion? Now half that.’
Hmm, when did my friends stop humouring me? Is this another ‘turning 25’ thing?
‘Is it really asking that much to turn a bad man with issues into relationship option?’
‘Look at Older Man.’
‘But we had The Amazing Dramatic Argument In The Rain! And great sex…’
‘That’s not a replacement for a relationship, and he dumped you on the day you lost your job. By phone.’
As much as I like to protest with unconvincing half hearted arguments, I guess she’s right. I am after the impossible. Bad men are more appealing to me than a night of gin and tonic after a twelve hour day at the office, with worse morning after effects.
I wondered if, like smoking, bad men are something I’m going to have to give up on turning the twenty-five mark. The trouble is, men don’t come with a gross health warning photo on the box to tell you what they’ll do to your insides. Though, that idea could really take off… Warning - Bad Men are highly addictive – don’t start!
