Check out our top ten list of movies for the ladies
Even the toughest of tomboys have movies that suck them in and unleash the girly girl inside. Here are the ones that have done exactly that to the women at Whisper Mag Towers - push thoughts of cliques and all your feminist sensibilities to one side, and enjoy this mix of guilty pleasures and classic movies. Here are our top ten (in no particular order though) - and some of our choices may surprise you...
1.) Dirty Dancing - One of the true greats. Unfortunately for my family I grew up owning it on video and I truly got my money's worth! What's not to love?! There is the summer fling element, boy from the wrong side of the tracks and filthy dance moves to boot. I could probably tell you every word uttered in this movie, but the infamous 'I carried the watermelon' will always be the favorite line that Baby blurts out to Johnny.
2.) Moulin Rouge! - Nicole Kidman is so gorgeous as, Satine, the star courtesan of the club, and Ewan McGregor is handsome and charming as ever. Baz Luhrmann brings us all the glamour of the Moulin Rouge, along with drama and all round fabulousness. It is a visual feast that you can enjoy over and over again. Any man that says he loves this movie will instantly find that I have a crush on him!
3.) Amélie - Who wouldn't want to join Amélie in her fantastical world where she sees love and beauty in everything? This film is quirky, funny, sweet and stylish, and I think we all fell a bit in love with Audrey Tautou in the lead role. Amélie tries to enrich the lives of those around her by weaving her special brand of mischievous magic. But ultimately it is her own love story that really engaged us.
4.) Grease - It has to be in every girl's top ten movies. My fella watched it for the first time with me recently although he didn't realise he would be enjoying it in surround sound - I can't stop myself singing along. Here at Whisper Mag we take the pink lady code very seriously and we can honestly say we have never been too pure to be pink!
5.) The Way We Were - If you haven't seen this classic, ask your mum to explain why it is a must see. A young Robert Redford looks so dashing as Hubbell and Barbara Streisand as Katie tugs at the heart strings. They have a wonderful romance spread over decades, but their political views and convictions drive them apart. It is the ultimate on-again off-again story.
6.) Romeo and Juliet - Baz gets another nod from us here. Again an amazing looking film - and studying Shakespeare at school definitely helped us to understand what Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes are chatting about as the script was based on Shakespeare's original text. This is a perfect movie for a girls night in; everyone knows the story but still the ending gets us every time!
7.) Ghost - Patrick Swazy makes it into our list again but this time it is from beyond the grave! This was a brilliant sleepover movie back in the day - it has it all the romance, the laughs, the drama...and we were actually quite scared of the demons things that came to take the wrong'uns away. Not to mention the infamous clay sculpting scene...
8.) Jerry Maguire - Anyone that doesn't melt at the line 'You had me at hello' has a heart of stone! Tom Cruise and Renée Zellweger give great and very likable performances. This is an old-fashioned crowd-pleaser of a movie and we lapped it up!
9.) Pretty Woman - If you give it too much consideration and business man and a hooker doesn't sound like much like a romantic tale, but somehow we manage to get past it all and Pretty Woman still stands the test of time. Julia Roberts is charming and the chemistry with Richard Gere is spot on.
10.) Cocktail - What is not to love about this 80s classic? It has spawned a generation of men that aspire to be able chuck a shaker around with the same style as Tom Cruise. It is probably the cheesiest movie in our list but we couldn't resist!
It was a tough choice here are a few that didn't quite make the cut: Gone With The Wind, My Girl, Days Of Thunder, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless In Seattle, Sliding Doors, Shirley Valentine.
