The biggest chart-bothering tunes out this week

Lykke Li – Breaking It Up

Like Klaxons meets Micachu, Lykke Li's Breaking It Up ticks a lot of fashionable boxes. Nice synths and catchy melodies.

The Chap – Proper Rock

There when all this LCD Soundsystem/Hot Chip malarkey all started. Deliberately quirky, surprisingly poppy, a bit like The Cure if they had synths and hung out in London’s East End a lot.

LL Cool J – Baby

"You know I don't think you can handle this one man"…right okay LL, whatevs! Another generic piece of rap forgetability. A bad overlayered singing chorus bit, occasional gang vocal saying “hey" and beats you've definitely heard before. It'll probably sell loads.

Alphabeat - Boyfriend

There are two versions of this song, and the one up for download this week is the 80s pastiche meets 90s pop song version - a no holds barred pop record. I personally think the other version has a better concept and a bit more honest – watch the video for that here.

Biffy Clyro – Mountains

I'm sure Biffy used to be good. Their new single, however is drippy, generic and frankly a bit disappointing. Trying and failing to be epic with a little piano intro and an anticlimax of a chorus, making you feel like you’re on a roller coaster that looks really scary at first and ends up being really slow with no loop-the-loops!

Eric Prydz – Pjanoo

Same old same old from Eric Prydz. Euphoric trance that doesn't go anywhere and, again, will probably sell really well. Watch the video though; it's got American Indian borrowers in it (below).
